Double Incentive – Janus 59

Madeleine Bishop was puzzled and a little apprehensive at the unscheduled visit by the Managing Director to the London office. Denzil Cairns,  the Scottish electronics wizard,  owned the company for which she worked. Not only did he own it,  he had created it,  inspired it’s growth from a tiny workshop above an Edinburgh bakery ten years ago to the nationwide giant it was today.

But why had the great man suddenly decided to fly down from Head Office in Scotland with a demand that the company apartment in Mayfair be prepared for a stay of several days – and that she,  Madeleine,  should make herself exclusively available to him throughout?

Madeleine felt uneasy. She knew that the brilliant Scot had unorthodox methods of tackling problems. What is more,  the shrewd young woman had been shaken to discover only a couple of days ago that her immediate boss,  Bill Watson,  had privately been investing company receipts into secure shares for weeks. The scheme was virtually undetectable – but Madeleine had spotted it,  and was anxious to warn Bill off on his return from a business trip.

It seemed impossible that even as canny a man as Denzil Cairns could suspect anything at this stage. Yet she felt wary…
